2016 Lyme Fundamentals Course

REGISTRATION UPDATE: ILADS pre-registration is now closed. We still have limited spaces available. Please send an e-mail to contact@ilads.org and let us know you are coming. See you soon. The ILADS Team

Objective

Lyme Disease Fundamentals provides an in-depth examination of the basic science, trial and clinical experience evidence pertaining to the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease. Epidemiologic, microbiologic and pathophysiologic evidence provide a framework for understanding which patients are most at risk for contracting the infection and potential disease manifestations. The role of laboratory testing in Lyme disease evaluations is discussed and information regarding an appropriate work-up for other common diseases in the differential diagnosis is included. Lyme disease can be complicated by the presence of other tick-borne illnesses and the disease manifestations, diagnostic testing and treatment of these entities will also be reviewed. The content related to therapeutic management provides analyses of the available trial evidence as well as information from other sources. This section highlights ILADS’ current GRADE-based treatment recommendations for management of known tick bites, erythema migrans and persistent (chronic) Lyme disease as well as management strategies for other presentations. The concepts of evidence-based medicine and shared decision-making are also incorporated into this section.

ILADS encourages participants to continue their learning November 4-6 at the annual ILADS scientific session. Learn more about the conference.

ILADS encourages medical professionals who are new to the treatment of tick-borne diseases, or would like a refresher course on the basics of diagnosis and treatment to register for the Lyme Fundamentals Course as well as the Conference. Learn More About The Course.

Conference Description and Goals

Upon completion of this CME activity, attendees should be able:

  • To understand the epidemiology and risk factors for contracting Lyme Borreliosis and other tick-borne diseases
  • To understand the microbiology and pathophysiology of stealth pathogens
  • To recognize Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Amblyomma ticks and understand which pathogens the individual tick species transmit
  • To understand the basic facts regarding Borrelia Burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme Borreliosis and its mechanisms for adaptation and survival
  • To understand the basic pathophysiology of early, late and persistent Lyme Borreliosis
  • To identify clinical presentations of early disease, late and persistent disease
  • To understand the role of ancillary testing and imaging in the diagnosis of Lyme Borreliosis
  • To formulate a differential diagnosis for Lyme Borreliosis
  • To understand ILADS' evidence-based treatment recommendations for managing patients with tick bites, erythema migrans, and persistent disease
  • To understand Jarrisch-Herxheimer reactions and treatment flairs
  • To understand basic facts and identify common presentations of Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma and spotted fever infections as well as some other opportunistic microbes
  • To understand the role of laboratory testing and imaging in the diagnosis of babesiosis, bartonellaosis, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and spotted fevers
  • To understand the treatment of babesiosis, bartonellosis, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis and spotted fevers
  • To recognize that the treatment of many presentations of tick-borne diseases and simultaneous tick-borne infections has not been studied in clinical trials and understand that management decisions must be made on other grounds, including expert opinion
