Vector-Borne Illness Fundamentals

This year we are offering a totally new Vector-Borne Illness (VBI) Fundamentals course for practitioners. This one-day track is for medical professionals new to VBI diagnosis and treatment and for those veterans who want to brush up on their basics.

The VBI Fundamentals course is designed to educate medical professionals on the basics of diagnosing and treating Lyme and tick-borne diseases. The course provides specific step-by-step guidance using lectures, real-world case presentations and interactive discussions. Upon successful completion of the Vector-Borne Illness Fundamentals course and associated quiz, attendees become eligible to participate in the ILADEF Physician Training ProgramTM.

In the Physician Training Program, participants shadow a seasoned ILADEF-designated expert in her/his office (or virtually) for one to two weeks, during which time the clinician observes firsthand how doctors come up with their diagnosis and treatment plan. Additionally, clinicians observe how to handle follow-up appointments and all their complexities.

Nicole Baumgarth, DVM, PhD

Dr. Baumgarth is a prize winning veterinary researcher.  After receiving a veterinary Degree and PhD from the School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany she has completed post-doctoral training in host-pathogen interactions in Australia and Stanford University. Dr. Baumgarth is a tenured professor at the prestigious U. C. Davis Center for Comparative Medicine (Now the Center for Immunology and Infectious Diseases) and the Dept. of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. She was elected as Fellow of AAAS in 2019.

Dr. Robert C. Bransfield, MD, DLFAPA is the first name that comes to mind when discussing the psychiatric implications of Lyme disease. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry and is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Bransfield’s primary activity is an office based private practice of psychiatry. In addition, Dr Bransfield is the Past President of ILADS, the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Educational Foundation and the New Jersey Psychiatric Association. He is a past awardee of the ILADEF Pioneer in Lyme Award. Additionally, he is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers—Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr Bransfield has authored and co-authored a number of publications in peer-reviewed literature, other medical publications and books; has been active in political advocacy on an international, national, state and local level.

Dr. Cornish’s approach to the treatment of chronic tick borne disease is to find the root cause of a person’s health problems by performing a comprehensive evaluation of the body’s various biological systems and taking an approach based on integrative strategies of healing. Due to her passion of solving problems with neurological infections, she was trained in SPECT scan brain imaging. This has allowed her to further assist her chronic patient population. She is Secretary of the board of the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Educational Foundation which is responsible for training numerous physicians on the treatment of Lyme Disease and co-infections. She was recently awarded in 2021 the Northern Virginia Top Doctor Award in functional medicine.

Dr. Corson’s approach addresses environmental, infectious, dietary, metabolic/biochemical, endocrine, immunologic, structural, emotional and spiritual determinants of disease while identifying and addressing the root cause of illness.

Dr. Corson’s solo practice in Philadelphia, PA is devoted full time to the treatment of patients of all ages suffering from chronic illness. Since 2004, after completing the ILADEF Physician Training Program she started speaking across the United States, Canada and Europe to health care professionals, community groups, and politicians regarding the epidemic of vector borne and environmental illnesses and the consequences these pose for society. In November 2009, Turn the Corner Foundation, a NYC-based non-profit organization devoted to funding Lyme research and education, awarded Dr. Corson with their Physicians Training Program Impact Award for her dedication to educating other physicians.

Dr. Corson is also a human rights activist. In 2008, she joined the non-profit organization Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH) and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of DAFOH’s e-newsletter. Dr. Corson also volunteers to educate health care professionals and government leaders about the forced live organ harvesting of Chinese prisoners of conscience, primarily Falun Gong practitioners.

Dr. Cubala-Kucharska is Director of Arcana Institute of Integrative Medicine Warsaw, Poland. She has consulted for the Council of Natural Therapies in the Polish Ministry of Health, and at the Autism Treatment Trust in Edinburgh. Her practice is focused on ASD, tick-borne, autoimmune and environmental diseases. Her research, conducted in affiliation with the Medical University of Lodz and published in peer-reviewed journals, is in the field of autism and tick-borne infections. Dr. Cubala-Kucharska serves on the ILADEF board of directors.

Dr.D earned her medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and completed her residency at the University of Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she served as Assistant Chief Resident.

Her goal is to decipher the complex nature of inflammatory diseases including vector-borne diseases and co-morbidities. She was formerly director of the Cutaneous Imaging Lab in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota, assistant professor for 15 years. Currently, she is also a fellow at the Thought Leadership & Innovation Foundation and an Adjunct Faculty at the Hormel Institute, University of Minnesota. Dr. Ericson has 25+ years of experience in imaging and quantifying biomarkers in skin and other organs. She specializes in imaging techniques including: multi-photon laser scanning microscopy, second harmonic generation, correlative microscopy, TEM and SEM, live imaging, and super-resolution microscopy. laser scanning microscopy and 3-dimensional analysis.

He is the Director of the Center for Advanced Microbial Processing in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Drexel University College of Medicine. His research has focused on the field of translational infectious disease medicine. Throughout his career he has developed and/or utilized cutting-edge technologies to improve patient care through more accurate diagnoses and prognoses. He has played key roles in the development of molecular diagnostics (MDx) for more than 30 years. Dr. Ehrlich has also contributed substantially to the theoretical understanding of the biology behind chronic bacterial infections as well as chronic microbial infections. This theoretical construct has been validated as a useful model for the understanding of the persistence of infection in the face of both an active immune response and antimicrobial treatment. Dr. Ehrlich is President of the ILADEF board of directors.

Lowell I. Gerber, MD, MS, FACC

Dr. Gerber, a Chicago native received his medical degree from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine. During his postgraduate education, Dr. Gerber was a Research Fellow in Experimental Pulmonary Pathology at the Stritch School of Medicine. That lead to his interest in and post graduate training in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Cardiology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida in 1980.

He was trained in coronary and peripheral vascular interventions in 1980. In 1986, Dr. Gerber was a visiting professor at the University of Normandy in Rouen, France, where he developed expertise in interventional, non-surgical treatment of structural heart disease and subsequently participated in the development of the percutaneous aortic valve procedure.

An ILADS member, Dr. Gerber is a Diplomate in the American Board of Internal Medicine, Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Disease, Subspecialty Nuclear Cardiology and Subspecialty Interventional Cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. He has held academic and research faculty appointments and has co-authored multiple cardiology publications and textbook chapters.

Ms. Green is a member of the Maryland Bar, the Florida Bar, and the District of Columbia Bar and has been engaged in the practice of law since 1983. Her practice currently focuses on medical malpractice, serious personal injury and criminal cases.

Since 2008, Ms. Green also has focused on legal matters arising out of Lyme disease. In 2010, Ms. Green authored the blueprint for Virginia HB1933 and Maryland HB 399, better known as the Patient Information Disclosure Act. These bills required notification to patients of the inaccuracy of the two-tier antibody test currently being used by many commercial labs. Both bills passed by a significant margin. Ms. Green continues to draft Lyme-related legislation and has testified before State General Assemblies as well as the HHS Federal Lyme and Vector-Borne Disease Working Group.

Rosalie Greenberg, MD

Rosalie Greenberg, MD, FAPA, DFAACAP is a board-certified, child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist in private practice in Summit, New Jersey. Although her practice focuses on children and adolescents with a wide range of psychiatric disorders, she specializes in the psychopharmacology of pediatric mood disorders and neuropsychiatric symptoms secondary to infections, especially tick-borne disorders.

Dr. Greenberg received her MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her adult psychiatric residency and child psychiatry fellowship at Columbia. She served as a Chief Resident in Child Psychiatry and served as a former assistant professor in clinical psychiatry at Columbia University in New York.

Dr. Greenberg serves as a consultant in psychiatry at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. She co-authored t“When Acting Out Isn’t Acting” (1991), and authored Bipolar Kids: Helping Your Child Find Calm in the Mood Storm (2007).

Dr. Greenberg has focused her practice and research on neuropsychiatric manifestations of infectious illnesses, especially tick-borne disorders in youth. Her original articles have addressed multiple areas related to childhood mental illness including among them similarities between PANDAS/PANS and pediatric bipolar disorder, the role of tick- borne illness in treatment of Resistant Pediatric Mood Disorders, and the high frequency of infection in a sample of bipolar youth.

Sharon Hausman-Cohen, MD

Dr. Sharon Hausman-Cohen is the Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of IntellxxDNA and Resilient Health. Dr. Hausman-Cohen has been in the field of integrative medicine for over 25 years. She and her co-founder developed IntellxxDNA as an answer to an unmet need in the integrative and functional medicine community; the need for an accurate, evidence-based genomics tool geared at helping functional and integrative physicians practice personalized medicine. They envisioned and created a tool that could help identify root causes of cognitive decline, environmentally acquired illness and other chronic illnesses, and one that could also help clinicians know how to address these genomic factors. A Pomona College undergraduate, Dr. Hausman-Cohen received both her masters degree and medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Medicine. She is an avid speaker and loves to teach her colleagues about genomics and how genomics can help with understanding the root causes of illness.

AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.
